Whenever a significant awards ceremony approaches, there’s always a clamor for introducing of new categories to honor underappreciated efforts and satisfy the spirits of fans dedicated to specific genres.
My colleague has already made for a horror game category. That would rule. Equally deserving are strategy board titles, this being a dedicated supporter's campaign. Yet I need to apologize in advance when I prioritize since similar to single-minded supporters, there's a strong justification backing this proposal remains most pressing and important of all. This is the request: We need a category for puzzle games.
Organizing Gaming Categories
Classifying creative works isn't exact; opinions vary greatly, and inevitably spark debates concluding with vague boundaries. It's understandable that film award organizations avoid this approach. However, it represents an unavoidable compromise within the realm of interactive entertainment, showing incredible range they hardly constitute as a single art form.
For the full spectrum of achievement in video games to gain proper attention, while allowing diverse titles to compete fairly, classification by type becomes crucial.
Current Gaming Award Categories
Prominent interactive entertainment events currently feature classifications covering Action, Action/Adventure, RPG experiences, Fighting, Simulation and strategy titles, and Sports/Racing games. Collectively, these six categories actually cover numerous genres, making space possible for numerous titles.
Not so for puzzle games. There’s simply nowhere to put them. Examine these examples from this year’s best games, each quite distinct: the architectural riddles in a particular game, the pulse-pounding block-matching in a different title, and the sweetly sociological logic puzzles in another game. What category would fit them among existing types? Simply put, no category fits.
Recognition Challenges
Numerous examples exist outstanding logic titles launched regularly without proper recognition during gaming ceremonies, unless they happen to qualify award groups including Handheld titles, Virtual reality experiences, and the highly challenging Indie races.
- A renowned logic title wasn’t nominated for anything during that awards season
- Another imaginative release missed out during that ceremony
- A beloved organization game was overlooked recently
- Only a few logic titles barely qualified for independent or mobile categories
Value of Brain-Teasers
These are often small games, however the design in brain-teasers is of massive significance. Famous handheld logic titles rank among most engaged experiences worldwide continuing this trend for an extended period.
The famous puzzle experience rivals well-known building titles claiming status as most purchased experience; it’s also in the running as greatest title ever. Logic titles represent cornerstones to the art of video games, and they are in conversation with almost every other genre.
Proposal and Rationale
Puzzle games wouldn’t have this problem. One could readily select a field of five engaging, different, qualified experiences each ceremony simply — perhaps, with difficulty, since numerous excellent numerous deserving experiences.
To emphasize again, these represent titles without proper classification at major gaming awards. Brain-teaser creators function at the challenging frontier of video game design, creating some of the purest expressions of gaming itself. Just like cinema stunt performers, they deserve recognition. Let’s not keep them waiting decades.
